Search MappedUp:
Desktop data deleted!! MacOs
Installed the screensaver version, got an error message ("could not be installed"), clicked "ok" and each and every file that I had stored on my desktop was GONE. We are talking 150+ files in various folders.
And if this wasn't enough, now the System Preferences keep crashing.
MacOS 10.5.6.

This happened to me too, what the hell! Fixed it by just relaunching finder, if that doesn't work you might try deleting the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist file then quit and relaunch the Finder.
