A couple of weeks ago, Jeroen received an invitation from Musicstrands, inc. to come over to Barcelona and build a customized version of MappedUp for their public website. Needless to say, he went over there, and while the rest of us was working in the freezing Dutch cold, he enjoyed the Mediterranean climate and Barcelona's night life. He actually managed to get some work done as well.

Music Recommendations

Musicstrands, inc. is a company specialized in music recommendation software. Part of their software is a little plugin for your iTunes or Windows Media Player (MyStrands plugin). It scans your entire music library and creates playlists by genre or mood. It also recommends you songs that, based on your profile, you might also like. When using the plugin, a MyStrands server stores what songs you play. This is where MappedUp comes in.

World Map

This is what the MappedUp MyStrands version looks like. It still shows the world map, but instead of RSS feed articles, the map shows in real-time what songs the users of the MyStrands plugin are playing. MyStrands members can see themselves on the world map, but also other members that are currently using the plugin. They can have a look at the music others are playing and they can contact other members, eg. when they have the same musical taste or live in the same area. At the bottom, the worldmap also adds music recommendations for each song displayed.
