"Every object tells a story" we sometimes hear, but rarely is that story spoken aloud, much less written down. Rob Walker has added another item to his long list of side projects (see Unconsumption and the 48-hour T-shirt project for others) in the form of Significant Objects, a weird and wonderful pairing of fiction and object culture that we wish we'd thought of first.

The simple premise: Walker and collaborator Joshua Glenn round up some great fiction writers, purchase a few cheap used objects from thrift shops and garage sales, then hand one to each writer. The resulting stories are published on the Significant Objects site, along with a link to an eBay shop where the newly Significant items can be purchased, and the proceeds directed to the writer.

Kurt Andersen of Studio 360 fame is on the roster, though his story hasn't appeared as we write this. What's been published already is surprising and seductive though, including Luc Sante's jewel heist caper about a Sanka-branded ashtray, and Ben Greenman's false history of a smiling mug as a WWII movie prop.

The stories are too short even to be called short stories -- a few paragraphs each -- but paired with the almost- but not-quite-kitschy thrift store finds, they take on a sort of meditative quality. Peering into each image and trying to imagine its history in the way these authors do is a strangely satisfying act. And what's better, after reading a few, we're tempted to start looking at other objects in the same way.(more...)

A simple sprite sheet

Update: Good news, everyone! A proper proposal for this kind of thing is already on its way. :)
CSS sprites are a nuisance
While CSS sprites offer nice performance benefits (less connections/overhead), they are troublesome in every respect. Putting lots of tiny images with different dimensions into one bigger image is fiddly and very hard – np-hard in fact. But that's the smallest issue. It doesn't need to be perfect after all. Deflate will happily squish all that extraneous white-space to virtually nothing.
One of the real problems is CSS. It just isn't flexible enough to let you do everything you might want to do with your sprite sheet. For example repeating parts of the image isn't possible. And if you want to display a sub region of an image in the upper right of some element, it only works if that sub region is in the lower left of the sprite sheet. So, the best thing you can do is to use elements in the size of the sub region and use background-position to slide the image around, but that usually means extra markup for something that should be very simple.
But it doesn't stop there. The real nightmare is maintenance. A year or two and several iterations later it becomes very hard to figure out which parts of the sheet are used. Where can you add one? Which one can be removed? How many places do you have to fix if you move this column a bit up? It all becomes a mess of fuzzy uncertainty.
CSS sprites are a huge time sink. They waste my time, they waste your time, and they also waste the time of millions of other front-end developers. It's about time to do something about it.
New York, May 8, 2009--Three monks, leaders of the Saffron Revolution and now in exile in the US, speak out about the 2007 uprising against the Burmese military junta portrayed in Anders Østergaard's documentary BURMA VJ: Reporting from a Closed Country, made in collaboration with undercover video journalists working for the Democratic Voice of Burma. The monks form part of the All Burma Monks' Alliance (ABMA) , located in Utica, which supports the many monks imprisoned in Burmese jails, where prisoners are not fed. ABMA also supports refugee monks who have escaped from incarceration and torture in Burma and works with other groups to promote human rights and democracy in Burma. See also the interview with Anders Østergaard and Khin Maung Win on this blog. BURMA VJ is currently in theatrical release and playing at the Film Forum in New York.Burmese with English translation and subtitles.

The Whistler Mountain Bike Park has announced that the highly anticipated Garbanzo Zone trails will open one week earlier than planned, this Saturday, June 20. “Weather has definitely been on our side this spring with lots of sunshine and warm temperatures melting away snow and drying up the trails,” says Rob McSkimming, vice president of business development at Whistler Blackcomb. “We’re very pleased that the Garbanzo trails are good to go so early. There is minimal snow up there and crews expect to get most of the trails open for the weekend. Although some sections of some trails are still a bit wet and soft from the snow melt, the overall conditions are excellent for this time of year.”
Love him or loathe what he allegedly became, there's no denying that Michael Jackson touched millions of lives with his music, artistry and iconic cultural status as the "King of Pop." Look here. He even inspired Jeff Koons who is, himself, no slouch in the pop culture sphere.

As for me, I will remember him simply as an integral part of my youth and thank him always for the music; we all have our personal soundtracks in Life. Selective memory, perhaps, but nonetheless valid.
