While the company already has a mobile operating system in Android, this new one will be based off of Chrome, Google’s web browser.
According to Google, the open source OS will available later next year and is primarily targeted at netbooks to start. From the Google blog:
“Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.”
It is designed to be a lightweight system, just like the Chrome browser. Unfortunately, Google didn’t divulge many other details, and it will be a while until anyone gets their hands on it. Clearly though, Google’s setting the stage for a major battle with Microsoft. Just as Microsoft is trying to break Google’s stranglehold on the search engine market, Google may be trying to do the same with the Windows-controlled market.

Google Chrome OS is Not Android

In the announcement, Google stresses that this operating system is a completely new project and not affiliated with Google's Android OS, which, according to Google, was always meant to run on a variety of devices, including netbooks. Google acknowledges that the two operating systems might overlap in some areas, but the company believes that, ultimately, "choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google."

Here is how Google describes the OS:

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.

The Google Chrome OS will run on top of a Linux kernel, though the exact details about the actual implementation are still vague.

Perfect for Netbooks

This kind of operating system would obviously be perfect for netbooks, which, after all, are meant to be constantly connected to the Internet and don't have a lot of resources. Currently, most netbooks run Windows XP, which, by now, is a rather antiquated operating system. With Windows 7, Microsoft tried to release a version for netbooks that would only run three applications at the same time (though Microsoft has since dropped this limit). Maybe Google is going to take this even further and will release an OS that will only run one application - Chrome.

With this, Google can obviously put its own web apps like Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Docs at the center of the user experience, and this is surely part of Google's motivation behind releasing this OS. But given that Chrome is simply a browser, any other web app would obviously also be able to run on it as well.

According to iStrategyLabs, from January to July of 2009, even though the population of Facebook members over the age of 55 grew 513.7 percent, the site now sees 16.5 percent fewer high-school users, and 21.7 percent fewer college users. Which, naturally, is cause for panic because when the cool kids leave it's all totally over. Or so the common wisdom says.

A BusinessWeek blog post has the right idea: Take a look at the methodology. iStrategyLabs did not actually survey Facebook members, it just looked at their affiliations. The downturn means that Facebook users are dropping their university and high-school affiliations, not that they're leaving the site per se. And that could mean one of a few things: as the BusinessWeek post points out, it coincides well with spring graduations from high schools and colleges, and some members undoubtedly drop those affiliations when they graduate.

Another theory that's been tossed around is that university and high-school affiliations can make it easy for administrators and teachers--not to mention parents--to keep tabs on kids and their shenanigans. Not joining networks can make a profile more incognito.

It's also important to note that these statistics come solely from Facebook's U.S. users, who now make up less than a third of its total membership.

And there's no related shrinkage shown in Facebook's age demographics that typically encompass high-school and college students--members under 17 are up 24.2 percent, and those aged 18-24 are up 4.8 percent. Just a smidge, but not a plummet by any means.

So this is a set of numbers to take with enough grains of salt to put around the rim of a margarita--but just think twice before you put the photo of you drinking that margarita on Facebook. Those sneaky adults could be watching. Originally posted at The Social

In my weakened, feeble state I decided that spending hours of an evening in front of Photoshop was simply not an option I wished to continue playing with. Instead, I resorted to the dreaded option of downloading a template (*gag* / *vomit* / etc). I bought the BLOG THEME GREEN PSD (descriptive name, I know) and did some heavy tweaking to make it look more Jem-esque (the irony being I spent more time tweaking this than I did creating my previous layout.)
Credit for the cheesy comment icon goes to DryIcons, the ninja to IconBuffet (as usual) and of course, the base layout 'iMike'... and I'm sorry for doing this to your lovely design.

Oftentimes, the details and clarifications build upon one another to complete the document. For example, if the designer has specified the layout and behavior for a button, the tech writer can add in the rollover text without disturbing the designer or the flow of the project process. To follow the example further, the tech writer can then add the help content to the wiki, allowing the engineer to upload the information onto a server and post the URL. The transparency and collaboration are quite amazing. Team members are able to get the information they need to perform their jobs and help the project along.
SpeedSpeed is a major benefit of wiki specs. This is also why it’s a good match for agile projects. Speed comes in two forms: writing and consumption. It’s easy to add content because of the WYSWIG interface. As you begin writing content, it can be instantly viewed by team members. I have found that the sooner you post sketches and thoughts the better. It gets the whole team collaborating and they can offer feedback immediately.
FlexibilityA wiki spec is extremely flexible. This characteristic allows you to morph its structure and organization as the project evolves, reflecting the nature of agile processes. The team is able to keep up with the changes that occur in an agile project because all edits can be instantly viewed. Additionally, if anyone wants to be informed of the most recent wiki changes, an email notification system can be set up by any team member.
ReversibleIn the event that a change was accidental or a major disagreement arises, the wiki spec can be reverted to its previous version. This does not happen very often, but when it does, it’s a real life saver. Figure 1: The image above shows the wiki revision history, including the date and time of the latest modifications.ArchivesSince wikis are hosted on a server by your company, the spec can have a longer life beyond the current team assigned. This living archive allows new team members to get up to speed quickly, and helps them understand how the project has evolved.
Centralized Image UpdatesAs they say, “a pictures is worth a thousand words” and the old expression applies to UI specs as well. No spec would be complete without images to help the team see what it is building. Once an image has been uploaded it’s easy to update all instances of that image. All that’s required is uploading a new image with the same name. This step saves time for team members and interaction designers, since we’re usually creating screen mockups as we go.
Informal Approval ProcessA team typically has an approval step or sign-off for a UI spec. This is often used to ensure that all issues have been resolved and everything has been documented to the team’s satisfaction. With wiki specs this step is unnecessary, since team members have been participating in writing the spec all along. This saves time and the formality of having a spec review. If the team does insist on a spec review, you can capture notes and issues in real time as the meeting is occurring and everyone can easily see the discussion progressing. As issues are resolved, the wiki can reflect the updates and decisions that were made after the meeting is adjourned. Team members can then modify entries and resolve any issues that remain outstanding.Challenges and SolutionsInstalling the WikiIf you are lucky enough to have either the technical prowess to install the wiki software yourself, or have someone on your staff do the work, then you will have overcome the first hurdle in wiki specs. There are many free wiki software programs available online, so you might be able to skip this first step all together. However, if you are working on anything that is propriety or secure, I would not recommend hosting it on a third party site. You might be exposed to competition or legal issues, not to mention someone else will have your product specs.
SyntaxAnother consideration is that wiki contributors must learn some syntax. This can be off-putting for non-technies, but the syntax is not difficult to learn and is similar to HTML. Many wiki software programs make it easy by providing a WYSWIG interface that allows for basic formatting while creating the syntax for you. This lets you focus on what you are writing rather than the syntax. Other ways around learning or creating complicated syntax is to pilfer code from another wiki template by simply copying and pasting it. If copy appears incorrectly, you can remove it or revert to a previous version. Wiki syntax also forces you to keep the document simple rather than spending time writing syntax for a spec.Figure 2: This interface shows the code created by the WYSWIG editor.PortabilitySome people like the capability to read and write documentation wherever they are. With wikis you have to be online for either of these activities. Even though connectivity is increasing, most companies have firewalls or VPNs that can make access more difficult.
SimplicitySome designers take pride in their documentation and deliverables. They spend a significant amount of time creating deliverables that are functional and beautiful. Wiki specs do not support this capability. They are essentially text editors that can be used to make documents more appealing by adding images, but they don’t really support the easy customization and flexibility that some designers would like to have. Images must be added one at a time and wikis don’t support many file formats. This may limit a person’s creativity in designing the document.
PrintingYou may often see people printing traditional specs so that they can read them during their commute or at their desks. Wiki documents can be printed but they lack the basic characteristics that you would find in a traditional spec. Most of the issues involve pagination. Images get bumped to the next page unexpectedly or tables are displayed across multiple pages. This makes reading difficult, but it can be done. Although I do understand why some people like to print, I would argue that it’s not good for the environment and you should try to work on screen as much as possible. However, the functionality is there for those who prefer to print.
TrustTrust is a major factor among team members. Some projects outright fail because of the lack of trust among individuals. Wiki specs can exacerbate a trust issue because team members have editing capabilities. If a lick of trust exists among your colleagues, you may see this manifested in the wiki via reverts and lots of edits or re-edits. This can be time-consuming and frustrating. If you have trust issues with your team or certain people need their roles clarified, you might want to consider an alternative method rather than a wiki spec.ConclusionToday’s economy and globalization are forcing companies to accelerate growth and increase revenue. In order to meet these demands companies are using new methodologies like agile, to bring products to market. As interaction designers we find ourselves working with these processes and playing an important role in the creation of new products. One of our major contributions is the UI spec, and the best way to document it for agile projects is through a wiki. It’s adaptive and allows for a collaborative experience.

Tracer est un petit service tout simple, qui existe depuis plusieurs mois déjà et qui permet, lors de tout copier coller, d'intégrer au dit texte un lien hypertexte vers l'article original...pour les distraits.
Bon alors certes, le "distrait" en question peut supprimer le lien ou bloquer les fonctionnalités de Tracer, mais bon là il ne pourra plus dire qu'il est distrait.
Le service offre aux utilisateurs un tableau de bord qui leur permet de suivre l'activité de ces copier collers justement.
Temps de mise en place création de compte compris : 3 minutes et 30 secondes.
A destination de tous les webmasters / blogueurs qui en ont juste marre de se faire ponctionner leur travail sans même le minimum de décence qui veut que l'auteur soit cité.

Amit most kitaláltak, az a Hírmátrix Guardian Zeitgeist. (Nyilván britek is azt gondolták, hogy idegen névvel jobban eladható az egyébként nem, teljesen egyedi áru.)

Nem csalás, nem ámítás, ez a Zeitgeist igen közeli rokona a "mi"  Hírmátrixunknak. (A Guardian fejlesztői az ötletet nyilván nem tőlük szedték. Mint annak idején erre több hozzászóló is felhívta a figyelmet, a NOL terméke "nem előzmény nélküli"...)

A Zeitgeist bizonyos értelemben kevesebbet tud, mint a Hírmátrix, mert nem játszik a négyszögek méretével (nem jelzi az egyes témák fontosságát) - ennek köszönhetően nem is töri kiszámíthatatlan módon a sorokat.





Fontos különbség, hogy a Zeitgeist felületén megjelenő híreket nem csak a Guardian felhasználói, hanem az "újság" híreit a közösségi hálózatokban továbbadók, csócsálók, véleményezők is vezérlik.

Nem ismerem az adatokat, nem tudom, mennyire dobják meg a forgalmat ezek az eszközök, játéknak viszont nem rosszak. Úgy húsz percig.

Azért találhatnának egy rendes nevet szegénynek.
